How to Decode an Apple Serial Number

Reading the results

A decoded serial shows:

  • Serial format — 12 characters (encoded format, 2010 to early 2021) or 11 characters (older encoded format, roughly 1999 to 2012).
  • Manufactured — the year and week the device was built. Some year codes are ambiguous, in which case both possible years are shown.
  • Factory code — where recognized, the site or manufacturing partner tied to that code, drawn from a community-documented, intentionally conservative reference list; an unrecognized code is labeled as such rather than guessed.
  • Model code — the last four characters of a 12-character serial, or the last three of an 11-character serial, resolved against a bundled reference list of more than 8,400 Apple-published model codes.

A serial the decoder can't place — the wrong length, characters Apple's format never uses, or date characters that don't match the documented encoding — gets a plain-language explanation instead of a guessed result.

Making the call

The model code, not the year or factory, is what pins down exactly which product you're holding — it resolves against Apple's own product-info reference data. Treat the factory code as background context, not a grading input: it records where the unit was assembled, not its condition.

If a serial won't decode at all, check its length before assuming something's broken. A 10-character serial isn't an error — it means the device is new enough that Apple stopped encoding this information, and Apple's own official page is the only way to identify it or check coverage from there.

When something looks wrong

  • The tool says the characters never appear in an Apple serial. Apple serials use only letters and digits — check for a copied space, dash, or other stray character.
  • It's 11 or 12 characters, but the date won't decode. The length matches an encoded-era serial, but the year or week character isn't one Apple's documented alphabet uses — it may be mistyped. Verify it on Apple's official checker.
  • It's exactly 10 characters and shows no manufacture info. That's expected, not a bug — Apple switched to random, information-free serials on devices made from roughly March 2021 on.
  • The model code shows as unrecognized. That's common on some 2020–2021 units and accessories whose code isn't in the bundled reference list — the rest of the decoded fields are still accurate.
  • You need warranty or AppleCare status. This tool doesn't provide it and never will — Apple publishes no public warranty API. Use Apple's own Check Coverage page.
